Submission of paper: Option A

Layout of journal articles (word count is 4 000-10 000, and 6-10 figures, supplementary material can be used; word count for short communications is a maximum of 4 000, and figures are optional).  References should be Vancouver style, font must be 12 point Times Roman, and lines and pages must be numbered consecutively.

Every result has a backstory.

At The Journal of Beautiful Failures, we invite authors to share not only what worked, but how it came to work. The intellectual pivots, the methodological detours, the emotional highs and lows—these reveal the true architecture of discovery. They help others understand that robust findings are often born from complexity, persistence, and the willingness to adapt.

By documenting the process behind the findings, researchers contribute something deeper than results: they offer insight into the craft of inquiry itself. They make visible the human effort that shapes knowledge, and they remind us that every conclusion carries within it a story worth telling.

Engineering Example

Think of the engineers who designed the first self‑healing concrete. The final product looks straightforward: a material that repairs its own cracks. But the process behind it was a maze of trial formulations, bacteria that died too quickly, capsules that burst at the wrong time, and mixtures that weakened the concrete instead of strengthening it. Progress came through dozens of small adjustments—changing the nutrient supply, altering the encapsulation method, rethinking the curing conditions—each informed by experiments that did not behave as expected. The breakthrough was not a single moment; it was the accumulation of every twist, correction, and recalibration along the way.

Physics Example

Consider the detection of gravitational waves. The headline result is elegant: ripples in spacetime observed for the first time. But the journey to that moment was filled with noise—literally. Physicists spent years chasing down tiny disturbances: passing trucks, distant earthquakes, thermal fluctuations, even the hum of electronics. Every “false signal” forced a redesign, a new calibration, or a fresh approach to filtering data. The final detection was possible only because researchers documented each misstep, each unexpected vibration, each adjustment to the instrument’s sensitivity. The discovery emerged from the long, patient work of understanding everything that was not a gravitational wave.

Medicine Example

Take the development of laparoscopic surgery. Today it is a routine, minimally invasive technique. But its evolution was full of uncertainty: early instruments were clumsy, cameras fogged or failed, surgeons struggled with depth perception, and procedures took far longer than traditional open surgery. Each challenge required innovation—new optics, redesigned tools, revised training methods, and countless simulations. The “successful” technique we see now is the product of years of frustration, refinement, and learning from procedures that did not go smoothly. The result is celebrated, but the process is what transformed modern surgery.

Choose a title that reflects the essence of your journey. You may emphasise:

  • the process
  • the unexpected turns
  • the final result (if applicable)
  • the insight gained, for example:

  • The Experiment That Taught Us Everything Except What We Expected
  1. Abstract (150–250 words)

Provide a concise overview of:

  • The original aim
  • The key twists, challenges, or surprises
  • Whether the project yielded a result (and what it was, if so)
  • Why the process itself offers value to others This abstract should make clear that the paper is about the journey, not just the outcome.
  1. Background & Initial Intent

Explain the starting point. Include:

  • The question, hypothesis, or design goal
  • The assumptions you began with
  • What you expected the process to look like This section sets up the contrast between intention and reality.
  1. The Process: Twists, Turns, Highs, and Lows

This is the heart of your submission. Describe the journey with honesty and specificity. You may include:

  • Early failures, false starts, or abandoned approaches
  • Methods or prototypes that behaved unpredictably
  • Intellectual or emotional highs and lows
  • Decisions to pivot, redesign, or rethink the work
  • Unexpected breakthroughs or moments of clarity This section should read as a narrative of discovery rather than a linear method.
  1. Outcome (If Applicable)

If your project produced a result, describe it clearly and succinctly. Focus on:

  • What ultimately worked
  • Why it matters
  • How the process shaped the final outcome If your project did not yield a result, briefly state that here — and emphasise that the absence of a result is itself meaningful.
  1. Reflections: What the Process Taught You

Discuss the insights gained from the journey. Consider:

  • What you learned about your field, method, or assumptions
  • How the process changed your thinking
  • What you would tell someone attempting something similar This is where the “beautiful failure” ethos becomes explicit.
  1. Implications for Others

Explain how your documented process can help others. This might include:

  • Pitfalls to avoid
  • Strategies for navigating uncertainty
  • Why sharing the messy parts of research is valuable
  • How your experience can inform future work in the field
  1. References

List all sources cited, following your preferred referencing style.
